Als Artists Against Antisemitism Freiburg<\/strong> sind wir schockiert \u00fcber den Hass, welcher der israelischen K\u00fcnstlerin und ESC-Teilnehmerin Yuval Raphael entgegenschl\u00e4gt \u2013 mitten in Europa, im Rahmen des Eurovision Songcontest in Basel, der unter dem Motto \u201eUnited By Music\u201c stattfindet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Schon seit Wochen l\u00e4uft eine antisemitische Hasskampagne gegen die diesj\u00e4hrige Teilnahme Israels an dem internationalen Megaevent. Gest\u00fctzt von Schweizer BDS-Gruppen und Samidoun nahestehenden Organisationen rufen vermeintlich Linke im Hamas-Jargon und mit blutiger Bildsprache unter dem Motto \u201eESCalate for Palestine\u201c zu Vandalismus und Gewalt auf. Dieser \u00e4u\u00dferte sich prompt in Morddrohungen gegen die israelische Delegation auf ihrem Weg zum Er\u00f6ffnungsevent.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seit Israel am ESC teilnimmt, ist es dem Hass selbsternannter Friedensaktivisti*innen ausgesetzt. Dieses Jahr scheinen alle noch ein bisschen mehr durchzudrehen: Mehrere \u00f6ffentlich-rechtliche Rundfunkanstalten anderer am ESC beteiligter Staaten rufen dazu auf, den j\u00fcdischen Staat auszuschlie\u00dfen \u2013 genauso wie \u00fcber 70 ehemalige ESC-Teilnehmer*innen dies in einem offenen Brief fordern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Der ESC hat sich \u00fcber viele Jahre zu einem der wichtigsten Events der internationalen LGBTQIA+ Community entwickelt: Trotz massivem Protest der ultraorthodoxen Gruppen schickte Israel mit Dana International 1998 die bis heute erste und einzige Transperson zum ESC \u2013 und gewann. Sp\u00e4testens seit diesem Zeitpunkt steht der ESC f\u00fcr Gleichheit, Freiheit und queere Selbstbestimmung. Somit ebnete Israel den Weg f\u00fcr die zahlreichen queeren ESC-Beitr\u00e4ge. Artist Nemo (welche*r als erste nichtbin\u00e4re Person im letzten Jahr f\u00fcr die Schweiz in Malm\u00f6 mit dem Track \u201eThe Code\u201c gewann, in dem v\u00f6llig zurecht die gesellschaftliche Inklusion von LGBTQIA+ Menschen einfordert wird) schlie\u00dft sich nun dem antiisraelischen Boykottaufruf an und reiht sich ein in den internationalen Tenor der von der Hamas beeinflussten Berichterstattung.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

W\u00e4hrend sich weltweit Menschen mit den u. a. kurdischen und jesidischen Opfern der Barbarei des IS solidarisierten, wurde diese Solidarit\u00e4t den Opfern der Hamas und ihren Verb\u00fcndeten vom 07. und 08. Oktober 2023 und den bis heute gefangenen Geiseln nicht zugestanden. Obwohl sich IS und Hamas in ihrer Ideologie und ihren Zielen nur marginal unterschieden, scheint die Zugeh\u00f6rigkeit ihrer Opfer dar\u00fcber zu entscheiden, ob sie international Mitgef\u00fchl erfahren. Wie soll sich das anders erkl\u00e4ren lassen als mit einem tiefsitzenden Antisemitismus?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wie beim ESC feierten die Menschen beim Nova-Festival das Leben und die Freiheit. Unerwartet wurden sie das Ziel eines genozidal-antisemitischen und misogynen Terrorangriffes. Yuval, die heute f\u00fcr Israel beim ESC antritt, hat dieses Massaker \u00fcberlebt, indem sie sich f\u00fcr Stunden unter den Leichen anderer Opfer versteckte und totstellte. Trotz allem steht sie heute auf der B\u00fchne des ESC, um wieder f\u00fcr dessen Werte wie Frieden und Gleichberechtigung zu werben. Allein daf\u00fcr erh\u00e4lt sie Anfeindungen und Morddrohungen von Menschen, die sich nicht um Verst\u00e4ndigung und Frieden bem\u00fchen, sondern eine B\u00fchne suchen, um ihren ma\u00dflosen Hass auf Israel ausleben zu k\u00f6nnen. Denn dieser Hass tr\u00e4gt in keiner Weise dazu bei, das reale Leid der Zivilist*innen in Gaza zu lindern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mit absolutem Unverst\u00e4ndnis mussten wir lesen, dass die Schweiz, trotz der enormen Hasskampagne, keine gesonderten Sicherheitsvorkehrungen f\u00fcr den Schutz von Yuval und ihre Begleiter*innen bereitstellt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wie kann es sein, dass antiisraelische Gruppen ohne Scham mitten in Europa \u00f6ffentlich zu Hass und zur Eskalation aufrufen und dem einzigen Schutzraum gegen den eleminatorischen Judenhass das Existenzrecht absprechen k\u00f6nnen? Und all das nicht eine Welle von Emp\u00f6rung in der lokalen Politik \u2013 aber auch im internationalen Kultur- und Kunstbetrieb \u2013 ausl\u00f6st?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deshalb rufen wir als Artists Against Antisemitism Freiburg in enger Zusammenarbeit mit lokalen Gruppen und Personen dazu auf, diese Verh\u00e4ltnisse nicht hinzunehmen und wir solidarisieren uns uneingeschr\u00e4nkt mit Yuval Raphael, den Menschen aus Israel und allen von Antisemitismus Betroffenen weltweit!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2013 Against Hate and Antisemitism at the ESC<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As Artists Against Antisemitism Freiburg, we are appalled by the hatred directed at Israeli artist and ESC participant Yuval Raphael \u2013 right here in Europe, during the Eurovision Song Contest in Basel, which claims to be \u201cUnited By Music.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For weeks, an antisemitic hate campaign has been targeting Israel\u2019s participation in this year\u2019s international mega-event. Supported by Swiss BDS groups and organizations close to Samidoun, so-called leftist activists have been using Hamas-style rhetoric and violent imagery under the motto \u201cESCalate for Palestine\u201d to call for vandalism and aggression. This quickly escalated into death threats against the Israeli delegation on their way to the opening event.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ever since Israel began participating in the ESC, it has faced the hatred of self-proclaimed peace activists. This year, the hostility has intensified: several public broadcasters from other ESC-participating countries, along with over 70 former ESC contestants, have publicly called for the exclusion of the Jewish state \u2013 not despite, but because of its existence as a Jewish state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the years, the ESC has become one of the most important events for the international LGBTQIA+ community. In 1998, Israel sent Dana International \u2013 the first and, to this day, only transgender person to compete at Eurovision \u2013 and won, despite massive protests from ultra-Orthodox groups. Since then, the ESC has stood for equality, freedom, and queer self-determination. Israel paved the way for the many queer contributions to Eurovision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is therefore deeply unsettling that artist Nemo \u2013 who, as the first non-binary performer, won for Switzerland in Malm\u00f6 last year with the song \u201cThe Code,\u201d a track that rightfully demands societal inclusion of LGBTQIA+ people \u2013 has now joined the boycott calls against Israel, aligning with a global narrative heavily influenced by rhetoric associated with Hamas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is an obvious double standard: while the world rightly showed solidarity with the Kurdish and Yazidi victims of ISIS\u2019s barbarism, that same solidarity has been denied to the victims of Hamas and its allies on October 7 and 8, 2023 \u2013 and to the hostages who remain in captivity to this day. Although ISIS and Hamas differ only marginally in their ideology and goals, the empathy shown seems to depend on who the victims are. How else can this be explained, if not by deeply rooted antisemitism?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just like at Eurovision, the people at the Nova Festival were celebrating life and freedom \u2013 until they became the targets of a genocidal, antisemitic, and misogynistic terrorist attack. Yuval, who now represents Israel at the ESC, survived that massacre by hiding under the bodies of other victims for hours, pretending to be dead. Despite everything, she now stands on the ESC stage to once again promote its values of peace and equality. And for this alone, she faces hostility and death threats from those who are not interested in dialogue or peace \u2013 but who use platforms like Eurovision to unleash their unbridled hatred of Israel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are stunned to learn that, despite this massive hate campaign, Swiss authorities have not provided any special security arrangements for the protection of Yuval and her delegation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How can it be that anti-Israel groups are allowed to publicly call for hatred and escalation in the middle of Europe \u2013 and to deny the only Jewish state its right to exist \u2013 without provoking a wave of outrage from local politics, or from the international cultural and artistic community?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is why we, Artists Against Antisemitism Freiburg \u2013 in close cooperation with local groups and individuals \u2013 call on everyone not to accept this situation any longer. We express our unwavering solidarity with Yuval Raphael, with the people of Israel, and with all those affected by antisemitism worldwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
